| Romeo and Juliet, the most moving romance of all, has inspired some of Europe’s best-loved music, from Bellini to Prokofiev. Less known is Georg Benda’s exquisite Singspiel of 1776, perhaps the first and most controversial operatic setting of Shakespeare’s play, which receives its important London première on Thursday 13 September in the baroque splendour of St John’s, Smith Square. |
