Reflections : Early music and musical instruments
26/07/2006
Discussing early music implies, above all, making a declaration of principles. I share the view that music that hasn’t been (or doesn’t need to be) rescued from a forgotten past shouldn’t be considered early music.

5 Star : Mass in B Minor BWV 232
27/07/2006
In literature, music and painting there are reference works that have become icons of Western culture over the passage of time. In music, Bach’s B-minor Mass is one of them. In fact, suffice to say simply the B-minor Mass, because it is only necessary to specify that we are not referring to Bach’s Mass when referring to another Mass in the same key (Michelangelo’s David is another paradigmatic example).

Special offer: The Vivaldi Pack (Goldberg Magazine 17 + 5 Star CD)
04/04/2006
Vivaldi was unjustly forgotten for more than 200 years until when, between 1926 and 1930, 27 volumes of manuscripts which contained totally unknown works, were discovered and brought together at the National University Library of Turin.

Despite this, he still remains an enigma even in the XXth century. Priest and musician, composer and entrepreneur, flamboyant virtuoso and hardworking teacher, insatiable innovator……We still know so little about him.

Here at Goldberg we have put together a pack made up of our magazine number 17 and the 5 Star CD entitled 'The Four Seasons' (by Fabio Biondi and the Ensemble Europa Galante) that will help you to understand the Vivaldi enigma meanwhile you enjoy an excellent version of one of his most renowned masterpieces.

William Boyce : a subtle balance between moderation, courtesy, elegance and vitality
31/07/2006
English music from the Tudor and Elizabethan periods - Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, Dowland - is relatively familiar to early music enthusiasts, but the same cannot be said of 18th century English music, including the work of composers such as Maurice Green, William Boyce, Charles Avison, Thomas Arne, John Stanley, Thomas Linley the younger and Charles Wesley.
