Musicora
20/02/2007
16 to 18 March 2007.
From 16 to 18 March the Caroussel du Louvre will, for the second year running, provide the exceptional setting for the 22nd Musicora festival. Musicora has always prided itself on being a meeting point for professionals, musicians, music lovers and classical music enthusiasts, principally within a French context, but also drawing a large contingent of exhibitors and visitors from all over Europe.

CD ON SALE: Musica Figurata
19/02/2007
Don’t be put off by the rather stiff and wordy subtitle, “Musica figurata in Wroclaw and Silesia in the 14th and 15th centuries.” Simply stated, we have here a top-notch ensemble of singers and instrumentalists performing mensural music from a number of Central European sources including, for the later works, two notable collections now residing in the Jagellonian University of Cracow and the University Library in Warsaw.

Boston Athenaeum
23/02/2007
A major exhibition at the Boston Athenaeum celebrating 200 years of collecting displays one of North America’s greatest musical treasures: a 1532 bound volume of Masses printed by Pierre Attaignant.

5 Star : Le Vœu de Louis XIII
01/03/2007
Nicolas Formé has so far been quite neglected on disc, notwithstanding his considerable standing as one of the principal composers at the court of Louis XIII. The centrepiece of this fine recording is the first Mass for double choir to be published in France. It comes alive at the hands and voices of Olivier Schneebeli’s ensemble.

Norway.-The Oslo International Church Music Festival
19/02/2007
16 to 25 March.
The Oslo International Church Music Festival this year celebrates its seventh year. Artistic director Bente Johnsrud explains that one of the cornerstones of her programming is to embrace various types of religious music, both past and present, and to provide a meeting point for the different artistic approaches to sacred music.

CD ON SALE: Songs of Angels
28/02/2007
The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford here present us with a magnificent collection of music written for the College, including some very rarely-heard works by Appleby (whose Magnificat is, I think, somewhat under-rated by David Skinner in his informative booklet notes), Preston (for organ) and (a surprise!) Jacquet of Mantua.

San Francisco Early Music Society
21/02/2007
Further south the San Francisco Early Music Society prepares for four summer workshops: baroque music and dance (17 June to 23 June); medieval and Renaissance music (24 June to 30 June); recorder music (22 July to 28 July); and a young person’s early music camp (29 July to 3 August).

5 Star : Vísperas de Confesores
26/02/2007
This recording of a cappella sacred works by José de Nebra is a very pleasant surprise. de Nebra is probably best remembered today as a composer of stage works, notably zarzuelas. However, the highly informative liner notes by Juan Carlos Asensio tell us is that in his day de Nebra was best known for his sacred music.
