Goldberg Magazine Nº45: Mateo Flecha the Elder
02/04/2007
Mateo Flecha, el Viejo, is one of the best-known Spanish composers of the Renaissance, despite his small output. But as Maricarmen Gómez explains in her article in this issue, this recognition did not come until 1955, when Higinio Anglés transcribed half a dozen of his ensaladas.

The Nordic countries create an early-music federation
03/04/2007
The Nordic countries –Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Island– have set up an association to promote early music. Various institutions from the five countries have been grouped together under the name NORDEM – Nordic Early Music Federation – with the objective of stimulating and promoting youth and student training in early-music through courses, seminars and master classes, as well as facilitating and coordinating the participation of early music performers in Northern European festivals and concert halls.

Special Subscription Offer: 'Buxtehude 300th anniversary'
13/04/2007
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) is the most important German composer between Schütz and J. S. Bach and the best representative of the German-Danish musical culture of the Baltic Sea, which was at its peak at the time. His output doesn’t bear the stamp of a genius, thanks to which the great composers took the style of their time to its highest level of perfection, but that of a musical culture that far exceeded the limits of mere craftsmanship.

5 Star : Miserere
12/04/2007
When it comes to rating CDs, a special category should be reserved for those that are truly outstanding. Such recordings are few and far between, as are works of art in general. This CD from the Tallis Scholars belongs to precisely that category, as I am sure anyone who has heard the album before reading this review would agree.

Internationale Barocktage im Stift Melk

In the magnificent surroundings of the Benedictine monastery at Melk, Austria, the Internationale Barocktage will again be taking place over the Whit weekend, under the direction of Helmut Pilss. The Festival was set up 26 years ago as the 'Pfingstkonzerte Stift Melk' and has been focussing on music of the baroque since 1991.

CD ON SALE: Anno 1630
02/04/2007
This recording is the sort of mixed collection the early Italian baroque appreciated. It is above all a showcase of the new instrumental music attuned to feelings and affetti developing at the time throughout Italy.

Sherbourne Abbey Festival
11/04/2007
In Dorset, the Sherbourne Abbey Festival (4–8 May) is set in a historical context with a lecture on the first evening by David Starkey, 'Church, State and Crown: Religion and Politics in England, 1500–1700'. Away from early music, the festival includes a variety of contributions from Sherbourne School, including Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, several choral services and two percussion-linked events.

5 Star : The Complete Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin Vol.I
10/04/2007
This CD –the first of two volumes– presents superb readings of three of Bach’s works for unaccompanied violin. Jacqueline Ross’s performances are eloquent and natural sounding, detailed yet spontaneous.

'Mayo Musical' in Bolea (Huesca)
04/04/2007
4 to 8 May.
This year’s seventh Mayo Musical (Musical May) Festival, to be held in the magnificent chapel of Santa Maria la Mayor in Bolea, Huesca, involves eight concerts. The Aragonese festival, organized every year by Pilar Fuertes and Fernando Rivera, founders and owners of the Arsis record label, is undoubtedly one of the most enthusiastic and meticulously professional events on the music calendar, and one which is characterized by its spirit of innovation and commitment to the less well-known repertoires, with a special emphasis on the best of Spanish music and its leading performers.

CD ON SALE: Sonate per flauto e basso continuo
04/04/2007
Several of these sonatas would more accurately be described as being played on the recorder rather than intended for it. Locatelli's Op. 2, for example, was designated for flauto traversiere, Castrucci's Op. 1 sonatas, like those of his teacher Corelli, were for violin.
