Special Subscription Offer: 'Buxtehude 300th anniversary'
13/04/2007
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) is the most important German composer between Schütz and J. S. Bach and the best representative of the German-Danish musical culture of the Baltic Sea, which was at its peak at the time. His output doesn’t bear the stamp of a genius, thanks to which the great composers took the style of their time to its highest level of perfection, but that of a musical culture that far exceeded the limits of mere craftsmanship.

5 Star : De Profundis Clamavi
07/05/2007
This beautifully performed program of 17th-century German sacred works for solo voice and string ensemble takes its name from Psalm 130, 'Out of the depths have I cried unto thee.' The recording features a setting of the psalm by Nicolaus Bruhns, as well as works by Matthias Weckmann, Johann Christoph, Christian Geist, and Benedictus Buns (known as Benedictus a Sancto Josepho).

CD ON SALE: Music for Philip of Spain
08/05/2007
This may be the latest disc born out of the Philip II craze, but it deserves special attention because it has been issued by people who knew quite well what they were doing. The heart of the album is a Missa pro defunctis in six voices by Jean de Richafort, which although published in 1532, may very well have been the one played during the monarch's funeral rites.

5 Star : Il Divino Boemo
09/05/2007
The name of Josef Myslivecek (1737-81) today remains indissolubly associated with that of Mozart, who first met him in Bologna in 1770. To what degree the Bohemian composer directly influenced Mozart remains a debatable issue, but the latter unquestionably admired his music.
