Among Handel’s operas Serse is interesting because of the way he breaks the conventions of opera seria, with short arias that are not in da capo form and an elegant interweaving of humourous characters and vocal styles among the more seria characters. |

Blow was Purcell’s teacher and friend, and after Purcell’s early death, lived in the shadow of his talented pupil, writing magnificent music. |
