Silvius Leopold Weiss (1686-1750), the composer who occupies the central pages of this issue of our magazine, was recognized in his era as one of its greatest musicians. |

Having past its quarter century of existence last year, the Utrecht Early Music Festival for 2007 continues to provide one of the most ambitious and concentrated schedules of any music festival. As usual, this year’s festival has several themes and sub-themes, the most intriguing of which is the overall rubric 'Ars Audiendi' (The Art of Listening), which will experiment with this little-explored aspect of musical experience. |

10 to 16 September. Estella (Navarre), Logrońo (La Rioja) and Vitoria (Álava) will once again play host to the Early Music Week during the month of September. The three cities join forces to organise the festival, which features some of the most important national and international figures in medieval, Renaissance and baroque music. |

19 to 23 September. The East Cork Early Music Festival was founded in 2003 by artistic director Sarah Cunningham, and brings together some of the best international performers, with world class musicians living in Ireland and younger players. Programming has combined some of the great baroque masterpieces -including a Brandenburg Concerto each year- with exploration of lesser-known repertoire, along with Irish music from earlier centuries. |

Now in its tenth year, the 'Mitteldeutsche Heinrich-Schütz-Tage' festival will be presenting enthusiasts of period music with a varied musical and musicological programme in Bad Köstritz (Thuringia) and Weißenfels (Saxony Anhalt), this year under the heading 'Music and Denomination'. |

4 to 7 October. Under the artistic direction of Pedro Teixeira, this four-day workshop for singers is based around the work of the Eborae Musica Polyphonic Choir, the aim of which is to revive music associated with the school of composers centred on Évora Cathedral in the 16th and 17th centuries. |
