1 to 24 August. The third Festival Artes no Camiño Third traces three routes –the so-called French, Primitive and North Roads in the province of Lugo– leading to the Road to Santiago. The festival combines a wide variety of styles including everything from Gregorian Chant of the monks from Samos Abbey to electro-acoustic music. |

| Among the people to figure in the Queen’s Birthday Honours was Emma Kirkby, who receives a DBE, making her a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and entitled to be called Dame Emma Kirkby. With the exception of a peerage, DBE is the highest honour available to a woman, the equivalent of a knighthood and there were just eight in this list The announcement came just after Dame Emma had spent a month being shadowed by a television crew, making a programme on her for the South Bank Show to be broadcast on 22 July. |

| 'Canty' is an old Scots word meaning 'small, lively and well-formed', and it’s an apt name for this all female four-part vocal ensemble, the members of which come from the superb Scottish choir Cappella Nova. |

16 September to 28 October. A handful of early music lovers founded an early music festival in Ribeauvillé in 1984, a small historic town in the Vosges region where the vines grow at the foot of the slopes. Perched high above are the ruins of three fortified castles, bearing witness to the fact that Ribeauvillé was the seat of the Confrérie des Ménétriers d’Alsace, the brotherhood of Alsatian minstrels, during the middle ages. |

| This forms a companion to Phantasm’s recording of the six-part viol consorts of John Jenkins (1592-1678), one of the finest practitioners of this very English form (Goldberg 41). As with the six-part works, the consorts are dominated by fantasias, 17 in all, freely unfolding continuous pieces that generally fall into several contrasted sections, although short pieces like Fantasia 1 in G and Fantasia 16 in D break this pattern by maintaining a vivacious mood throughout, the latter driven by a playful exuberance that delights in skilful contrapuntal interplay. |

7 to 31 October. The 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia occurs this year, good grounds for dedicating the 9th 'Güldener Herbst' Festival in Thuringia to her memory. And the festival also marks a further jubilee, that of the composer Philipp Heinrich Erlebach on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of his birth. |
