We couldn’t conclude 2007 without paying our own special tribute to Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757), the 250th anniversary of whose death has been marked this year. Although Italian by birth, as a musician he could also lay claim to Portuguese as well as Spanish credentials. The latter stem not only from the fact that Spain was his country of adoption, but from the intense musical activity and influential role that characterised his almost thirty years in Madrid.

I first heard this performance on an early review copy, and discussed it in my article on the Art of Fugue (Goldberg 37). Its dramatic character stems from Brookshire’s vehement rejection of the austere image associated with this work; in his view, the music’s profound expressiveness and stylistic variety 'permit –I would even say demand– a relatively inventive, mercurial, and dynamic performance style'.

One of the highlights of the current, grand exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is an 1805 lyre guitar made by the firm of Pons fils. The MFA has two such lyre guitars in its collection; the earlier one was singled out for the exhibition, 'Symbols of Power: Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800-1815'.

Robert Carver was one of the brightest stars in King James IV of Scotland’s Chapel Royal and this nearly-decade old recording by The Sixteen makes a very compelling case for the composer.

This unusual picture book featuring large-format photographs by Florian Monheim, a renowned architectural photographer, invites you to immerse yourself in the special world of cathedral art. Monheim's photos feature the beauty, both apparent and concealed, of great cathedrals, capturing the magic of these locations and preserving the qualities which churches can give to a viewer today in the way of fascination, inspiration and peace. The optical effect is enhanced by classical music by Bruckner, Schütz, Pergolesi and other composers.
