FIRST EDITION OF THE GOLDBERG MUSICAL ESSAY COMPETITION
Competition Rules
One of the objectives of the Goldberg Foundation is to foster initiatives in the recovery,
promotion, dissemination and reappraisal of the classical music heritage of all historical
periods, and in particular early music. It is therefore pleased to announce its first musical
essay competition, in accordance with the following provisions:
First: Participation
The First Goldberg Musical Essay Competition is open to all musicians, musicologists,
researchers, scholars and others with an interest in the dissemination of music, who are
invited to submit original articles not previously published in any printed or electronic
medium. Articles may, however, be based on research papers, doctoral theses or other
academic papers written by the author of the article. Entries are limited to three articles per
candidate.
Second: Nature of the submitted articles
Articles will be on any aspect of the history, composition or performance of early music,
the latter being understood as music belonging to the period spanning from the Middle
Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. Articles may deal with an individual composer or
work, a style, an instrument, performance practices, or any other aspect relating to the
social, cultural or economic aspects of music. Whilst observing the highest standards of
historical and musical rigor, articles should be addressed to a wide audience, appealing to a
discerning, although non-specialist readership.
Third: Languages and length
Articles may be submitted in the following languages: Spanish, English, French, German
and Italian. The length of the articles should be between 3,000 and 4,500 words (14,140 –
21,190 characters, not counting spaces).
Fourth: Prizes
The Competition will award three prizes of 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 euros, respectively, to
the best three articles submitted.
Fifth: Jury and judging criteria
A Jury consisting of the Trustees of the Goldberg Foundation and the Editorial Committee
of Goldberg Magazine will judge the articles submitted and adjudicate the Competition
prizes. The judging criteria will be as follows: 1) Originality of the articles submitted; 2)
Historical and musicological interest; 3) Broad interest base, clarity, readability and literary
merit. The Jury reserves the right to declare the prizes void, in which case the prize-money
will be carried over to successive editions of the Competition.
Sixth: Publication of the articles
The prize-winning articles will be given prominent publication in the Spanish and English
language editions of Goldberg Magazine after January, 2008. Goldberg Magazine will be
responsible for the translation of articles written in languages other than Spanish and
English, and, prior to publication, will forward the translated articles to the authors for
their approval.
Goldberg Magazine will also publish reviews and interviews with the authors of the prizewinning
articles.
Seventh: Deadline and submission
Articles must be sent by 00.00 hours, 30th October, 2007, to the following address:
oliviagimeno@goldberg-magazine.com. Receipt of all submissions will be acknowledged. If
no acknowledgement is received, the author should immediately contact the Goldberg
Foundation at the following address: info@goldberg-magazine.com. In addition to their
competition entries, authors are requested to submit a short CV of up to 500 words, as well
as the following contact details: postal address, E-mail address and telephone number.
Eighth: Decision of the jury and notification of the winners
The Jury will meet and publish the results of the competition before 1st January, 2008. The
winners will be directly notified by the Jury.
