Dedicated to Lully, which is certainly the least that the young joueur de viole de la Musique de la Chambre that Marin Marais then was could do, the first book of Pièces à une ou deux violes was published in 1686. Already highly renowned, and cited by Sainte-Colombe (his teacher) and Demachy as one of the great, Marais innovated from this first publication: he provides the solo works with a continuo, the detailed edition of which would appear only three years later, in a separate book, containing moreover some additional pieces, such as a superb set of variations on a basso ostinato. In a long foreword, the composer explains very precisely the playing of the viol as he conceives it and clarifies the nature of the ornaments to be used, acknowledging that though certain pieces are accessible to players who are not too experienced, the majority requires great virtuosity.

The anthology comprises 93 pieces, from which the performer draws to form several suites, taking careful account of the tonalities. In contrast to the following viol books, in which character pieces occupy an important place, this contains only two, The Countrywoman and The witticism. Finally, Marais includes the first Tombeau he wrote, that of a certain Monsieur Méliton, which prefigures the poignant and grandiose compositions of the Fourth and Fifth Books.

On two different viols, one a Barak Norman of 1718, Philippe Pierlot provides a splendid first offering in a future complete edition of the Books of Marin Marais: opulent sound, penetrating and luminous elocution, subtly measured continuo (the magnificent theorbo of Vincent Dumestre in the sarabandes). Three discs for bedside listening. SOPHIE ROUGHOL
