PETER ABELARD, CODEX LAS HUELGAS, ANONIMO

Paul Hillier

Theatre of Voices

Harmonia Mundi HMU 907209
1997 - 66:05 min.

Upon listening to this magnificent recording, several things appear to make no sense. However, the group's performance is incredible. From the very first moment, the atmosphere is suited to these types of chants, several of which are funereal (especially those from Las Huelgas). The addition of vocal bourdons helps to sustain the very beautiful melodic lines which, as is the case with works from the Burgos codex, have been linked by the use of brief instrumental interludes (played by a solo fiddle). This repertory comes in stark contrast to the works of Peter Abelard, which are much freer and longer, and range from the simplicity of Epithalamica to the sumptuous severity of the De Profudis and the Planctus David. The timbral unity is magnificent in pieces performed by more than one vocalist, especially in works such as Virgines caste.

And now for the surprising part. First, the disc's subtitle. To allege that these are 12th- century chants is rather dangerous considering that the inclusion of the lament O monialis concio, dedicated to one of the abesses of the convent in Burgos on her death, would put us in the second third of the 14th century. Secondly, the "French" way of pronouncing works conceived on Spanish soil is debatable, to say the least. Scholars have acknowledged the influence of the abbey of Fontevraud on Las Huelgas, but taking this relationship to the point of pronouncing the lyrics in the same way is perhaps stretching it a little too far. And third, the planctus Plange, Castella misera, for the death of King Sancho III, has been incomprehensibly tampered with. The last three lines of the piece have been omitted, leaving it incomplete, without any mention of this alteration. It's a pity that the high quality of the group's performance has not been matched with the same level of musicological scholarship. JUAN CARLOS ASENSIO
