Alia Vox AV 9803

The hand holds the bow over the canvas like a paint brush prepared to play or paint, to speak of its musical passion. The cover image of this disc (a detail from a painting by Geneva-born Gioacchino Assereto) underlines the subject of this recital: the vision of the interpreter. This is not just any interpreter, but one whose vision is an historical account. Jordi Savall delights us with his jubilant humility, an expertise that becomes a wisdom more incisive than words, more dazzling than the voice. His approach, his "hand" delights in weaving the most moving emotions never before imagined for the bass viol. More than a compilation, this radiant recording unveils the absolute vocalism of an instrument transformed, body and soul, by the artist-interpreter's commitment. The choice of pieces is intelligent.Borrowing from the impassioned and passionate interpretations of Mersenne, Rousseau and Maugars regarding the right and true note, Jordi Savall chose a path in five sections that mixes diverse composers who are themselves for the most part virtuoso viol players. From the lavish texture to the rich and diffuse resonance of Abel, Schenck, Playford and De Machy one hears Bach's unequivocal meditation. There are real delights in the selections: Saint Colombe and above all the violist Marin Marais whose sensitive and spare playing illuminates the exceptional musical ideas. Les Voix Humaines, the title cut of this recording, and Sarabande à l'espagnole by Marais alone deserve the highest of critical praise. The opulence of the sonority and temperament of the interpreter, the extreme exactitude and Jordi Savall's personal musicality invite the listener to partake in several states of grace and inspiration. This is an exceptional musical experience. ALEXANDRE PHAM
