Alessandro Melani (1639-1703) was a member of a musical family in Pistoia who directed the music at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome for 26 years. The six cantatas for soprano solo on this disc are typical of the 17th century concern with love and war. His most familiar work, All' armi, pensieri, recorded several times, is not included. Two other works currently available on other discs, Qual bellici accenti and Qual mormorio giocondo, are in effect duets between soprano and trumpet, one of Melani's favorite types of composition. Placed at the beginning and the end, they frame the program brilliantly. Two cantatas use Roman historical subjects, featuring Tarquin in one and Pompey in the other. But all the cantatas generally keep love and war at the center of things.

Rosita Frisani is a stunning interpreter of this music. Her voice is beautifully centered, and she projects the poetic feeling of each piece very effectively. She deserves to be known better. The period-instrument players support the singing stylishly, and the sound is most realistic. Be sure to hear Frisani on this disc and look for her again soon, for her career is bound to catch fire.
