In roughly chronological listings of important concerti grossi starting with the examples of Alessandro Stradella and Giuseppe Torelli, one immediately thinks of Arcangelo Corelli and a whole host of post-1700 composers influenced by him. These, for example, include Pietro Locatelli in Holland, Antonio Vivaldi in Italy, and, in England Corelli's pupil, Francesco Geminiani, and most notably George Frideric Handel. Another student of Corelli, Pietro Castrucci (Rome, 1679-Dublin, 1752), wrote a dozen concerti grossi which were published in London in 1736 but curiously are rarely mentioned, perhaps because he wrote relatively little instrumental music and was more of a follower than an individualist in style. His main claim to fame was that of a brilliant violinist who spent some 22 years as leader of Handel's opera orchestra. Incidentally, Pietro Castrucci's younger violin-playing brother, Prospero, is supposed to have been the subject of one of Hogarth's satiric engravings, The Enraged Musician, showing an impossibly raucous London street scene with a violinist inside holding his hands to his ears. This amusing illustration serves as the present booklet cover.

The Handel Festival-based orchestra, numbering twenty-two period instrumentalists presents this first recording of any of Castrucci's concerti grossi in the best possible light. These are captivating, spirited performances, admirably precise. Add to the high quality of the performances the beautifully transparent reproduction of these splendid renditions, and you have one more reason for obtaining this disc, although one might be disappointed that only half of the dozen concerti grossi are presented here when room might have been found for an additional four.
