ALFONSO X EL SABIO

Eduardo Paniagua

Música Antigua

Pneuma PN-340
2001 - 62:16 min.

The theme of Eduardo Paniagua's latest collection of cantigas is the appearance of animals in the miracle stories (there are no loors, or songs of praise, in this group). Apart from two instrumental performances, there are five cantigas never recorded complete, including No. 103. This one has been recorded by Philip Pickett and Thomas Binkley, but strangely both versions omitted the final verse. The other three cantigas have been recorded before, but Paniagua's complete traversal of the collection will eventually include such works. We are fortunate that he has concentrated on so many of the cantigas that have never heard on record. It is even more fortunate that he continues to perform each piece in its entirety, for only then can the miracle story unfold properly.

The only recommendation that can be made to anyone who knows the wealth of music contained in Alfonso's collection is to acquire all of Paniagua's discs. But for those who are buying only some of them, this collection is an especially good one. So many cantigas include animals that only a few of them that feature the beasts have been chosen for this disc. The final selection on the program features the weasel, Alfonso's own favorite pet, but wild goats and boars, falcons and insects (spider, bees, silkworms) also appear. The singing and playing are spirited, and the sound is spectacular. This is a disc not to be missed. JEROME F. WEBER
