TOMASO ALBINONI

I Musici

Maria Theresa Garatti , Felix Ayo, Heinz Holliger, Maurice Bourgue

Phillips 456 333-2
1960 - 134:54 min.

With a facile and pleasing pen, melodic ease and harmonic simplicity, irresistible and elegant vitality, Albinoni's verve is ultimately adaptable to many styles of interpretation. One still dreams that some Baroque expert of our time will attack the vast number of his concertante works and add to them the touch of spice that would revive the dish. But it must be confessed that I Musici's legendary interpretation weathers the years without taking on too many wrinkles. Certainly the orchestral constitution would today be more transparent, the cadences less naive. But the strings' purring is, on the whole, fairly reassuring and even beguiling. The tempi are moderate, the adagios very modestly ornamented but with a velvety lyricism. No stylistic fault, either, arises to oppose the energetic virtuosity of Holliger and Bourgue, reunited on this disc in the oboe Pantheon. The violinist Felix Ayo's contribution is well adapted to this interpretation, which is perfect for a winter evening by the fireside. SOPHIE ROUGHOL
