Bonaventura Aliotti lived and composed in Padua, Ferrara and Palermo during the second half of the seventeenth century. Little else is known about him, not that this is important. This oratorio (probably the first of his works ever to be recorded), premièred in 1686, reveals his talent for composition, a notable mastery of the expressive resources of music, and a considerable capability for melodic invention. Some of the arias are very beautiful, especially the duet "Pietà", while the choral passages reflect an impressive command of counterpoint.

Gabriel Garrido premièred Il Sansone at the Church of Santa Maria della Gancia in Palermo, under the auspices of the Teatro Massimo Foundation of the same city and the Assesorato alla Cultura del Comune di Palermo. Here he conducts it with dedication and attention to small detail and dramatic momentum. The Ensemble Elyma and the Studio di musica antica Antonio Il Verso respond with their habitual commitment (of special note is the rich continuo, featuring the theorbo, lute or guitar, harp, harpsichord, organ or spinet and bassoon, as well as violas da gamba, lirone, violoncello and double bass).

The sensuality pervading this previously unknown Franciscan monk's score has found a staunch ally in the voice of Adriana Fernández. Her Delilah is magnificent. The same cannot be said, however, for Francesc Garrigosa, whose Samson is not up to the character's vocal demands. His timbre does not blend in with the rest of the Ensemble and his air column vocal production is somewhat unsteady. The recording's striking realism is an added bonus. DIEGO FISCHERMAN
