The Möller manuscript - named after one of its past owners, a student-of-a-student of Bach - was compiled in 1703-1708 by Bach's elder brother, Johann Christoph. It provides valuable insights into the music Bach studied and absorbed in his youth, alongside examples of Bach's own early keyboard works.

Most of the works recorded here have a serious demeanour, with dense textures, richly ornamented melodies, and a wide expressive range. There are, however, lighter pieces - Lully's Chaconne is more immediately engaging, and there is much zest and vivacity in Zachow's and Fabricius's gigues and Böhm's Capriccio (though his Suite is perhaps the most uncompromisingly serious work in this recital).

Bach's pieces contain some of the lightest, most extrovert moments here - such as the brilliant "Aire pour les Trompettes" in the A major Suite, and the Posthorn-inspired "Arie" and "Fuga" which conclude his Capriccio. The Toccata (a rarely-heard alternative version of the Toccata BWV 912) covers almost the entire expressive range of the disc as a whole, and acts as a highly effective curtain-raiser for this engrossing recital.

Cerasi's performances are superlative throughout. She plays on two instruments, both of which have a deep, resonant sound and a wide range of registers. Her playing is an object-lesson in how to create light-and-shade on the harpsichord, through subtleties of phrasing, dynamics and rubato, as well as varied registration. She explores the full range demanded by the music, from subtle, richly-nuanced reflection to dazzling virtuosity - though there is no lack of thoughtfulness and flexibility even in the most brilliantly extrovert passages. Nor is she afraid of bold contrasts; this makes her performances of Bach's Toccata and Capriccio especially compelling. URI GOLOMB
