ALFONSO X EL SABIO

Eduardo Paniagua

Música Antigua

Pneuma PN 280
2000 - 67:50 min.

Readers who live outside Spain should know that Eduardo Paniagua began to record the complete cantigas of Alfonso el Sabio on his own label, Pneuma. Sony soon undertook the production of his recordings, but only the first set (The Life of Mary) appeared in the USA. When Sony ended its Hispanica series in Spain, the entire series reverted to Pneuma (now distributed in the USA by Empire Music). The theme of the latest disc is Our Lady of Atocha, a Visigothic wood carving in Madrid.

This disc is an example of the strength of the series, for each cantiga is sung complete. The seven cantigas on this disc are all miracle stories, each comprising seven to fifteen verses. None of the seven has ever been recorded before. Paniagua also adds two cantigas performed instrumentally. (When the series is complete, will we be able hear these selections sung?)

Complete cantigas on records are more common now than they were a decade ago. But Paniagua's further strength is the quality of the performances. The singers tell the stories with great flair, and the instruments provide an authentic medieval sound. Sometimes the instrumental elaboration goes on too long, but Paniagua clearly assigns great importance to the role of the players. Four soloists of different vocal range sing with the choral group. The program builds up from an instrumental performance at the beginning to all four soloists with chorus in the final piece. This disc continues the admirable series and allows us to hope for more of these programs. JEROME F. WEBER
