ALEXANDER AGRICOLA

1998 - 67:04 min.

Alexander Agricola (1446-1506) was widely admired in his own time, ranked with his contemporary Josquin des Prez. Today he is almost forgotten, not heard on recordings very much. Coincidentally, this disc of his music appears at the same time as the Naxos CD devoted entirely to his secular music. Rob Wegman has published his recent research, so we know more about his life than we did. Born in Ghent, he traveled widely as a singer and died in the service of Philip the Fair in Valladolid. Agricola and his king both died of the plague.

We do not have any of his nine Masses on records, for this disc presents five Mass movements selected from five different Masses, all for four voices. Three of them had been published in a single volume by Petrucci, an indication of his stature as a composer during his lifetime. The Sanctus of the Missa Re-fa-mi-re-fa has a remarkable chromatic Hosanna. The program also includes a Salve Regina, several pieces in the Chant sur le livre style (one or two polyphonic voices are added to a chant melody), and several chansons that have proved to be popular on records already.

Paul van Nevel has been pursuing the more neglected areas of the early Renaissance on discs. His unaccompanied vocal ensemble makes a strong case for a composer who is too little known today. This disc is an important addition to the catalogue. JEROME F. WEBER
