ANONIMO

Nuria Rial , Jose Miguel Moreno, Jose Miguel Moreno

Glossa GCD 920205
2000 - 60:33 min.

Claros y Frescos Ríos is the third volume in Glossa's excellent La guitarra española series and features soprano Nuria Rial and José Miguel Moreno playing vihuela and the four-string renaissance guitar. Much of the program focuses on music taken from popular sources that were passed down by oral transmission and eventually set down in print by some of the key Spanish composers of the 16th-century. Perhaps the most compelling music on the recording are selections from the remarkable Orphénica lyra by Miguel de Fuenllana and songs by Alonso de Mudarra.

While much of this repertoire will be familiar to lovers of music of the period, the extraordinary performances by Rial and Moreno take it to a higher level. Rial is a new voice to my ears and follows in the footsteps of such magnificent singers as the blessed Marta Almajano and Montserrat Figueras. Rial sings Esteban Daza's A tierras agenas with gorgeous tone and an emotional vulnerability that drove me to replay the selection a number of times. Rial effortlessly shapes phrases and makes every note clear while also singing with a nimble agility that never compromises her beautiful tonal quality-her performances are remarkable but in Fuenllana's transcription of Morales' Benedictus, she is sublime. Moreno's accompaniment is tasteful and engaging-he impresses in a number of solos, particularly the wonderful Romanesca by Mudarra. Performances, packaging and sound quality makes this as perfect a recording as you will ever encounter. CRAIG ZEICHNER
