Franghiskos Leontaritis (1518-1572) was born in Crete some years before El Greco. Since the island was governed by Venice, the composer went there to study just as the painter would do later. The recording offers a parody Mass on the popular song Aller mi faut and eight motets. The motets are performed in several styles, some with five voices a cappella, others with five instrumental parts, and one motet is performed with one vocal and four instrumental parts. The Mass is the earlier of two parody Masses, and the motets were printed in the composer's Second Book (Venice, 1566).

This disc was made in Greece as the second offering in a series of the Hellenic Renaissance (the first was issued in 1997). Greek pride notwithstanding, Leontaritis would seem to belong more to the milieu of Venice than the Greek lands. The notes associate his career with Willaert and Lassus, and this Mass was copied at the Bavarian court. Beyond this limited information, a biography can be found by searching the web, where a summary of the research of N. M. Panayotakis, published in 1990, can be found. Leontaritis went from Crete to Rome, where he was ordained a priest. He then went to Venice in 1544 and sang at St. Mark's under Willaert after 1549. He went to Munich in 1562 and sang at the court under Lassus until 1567, when he returned to Crete. Endowed with a remarkable voice, he was the first Greek composer to write in Western style. This fine disc will make his music accessible for the first time. JEROME F. WEBER
