   JOAN BAPTISTA COMES
(1582? -1643) Comes was taught in the Cathedral of Valencia where he was a boy singer in 1594.

He was a singer and later appointed chapel master at the Cathedral of Lérida in 1605. His next position was that of assistant chapel master of the Patriarch Chapel in Valencia from 1608 to 1613. In this same year he became the principal musician in the Cathedral of Valencia.

In 1618, he left Valencia and became the assistant chapel master of the Royal Chapel of Music of Felipe III in Madrid. In 1628 he returned to Valencia to the Patriarch's Chapel as master.

Due to the insistance of his superiors at this Chapel and their refusal to excuse him from the teaching of the boy singers, as they had done with others, he left the Patriarch definitively and went back to the Cathedral in 1632.

Comes established in Valencia the multi-choral form and developed an own form for his villancico. He introduced the continuo bass in many of his compositions, and he had great interest in giving independence to the instruments that accompanied his works. His works consist of about 250 compositions.

Among those that occupy an outstanding place are the villancicos. It is also necessary to point out his Litanies to the Sacred Sacrament, and his Passions according to Saint Matthew and Saint John which are musical settings of the whole evangelical text.
