Since then his career has been linked with these two groups with whom he records and tours and with whom he plays the broadest repertoire ranging from Early Music to the latest contemporary music commissioned for viols. He also plays the cello and the bass violin for the Purcell Quartet and has recorded over thirty albums with them for Hyperion and Chandos.
He has recorded fifteen albums with Fretwork for Virgin Classics that have achieved remarkable success. Their recent contract with Harmonia Mundi USA has already produced three compact discs: one of music by Sir John Tavener, one of the earliest music for viols printed in Venice by Petrucci in 1501, and most recently the highly-praised Die Kunst der Fuge.
He is a prime mover in the quest to enrich the viol repertory with new music and with Fretwork has been involved in commissioning music from George Benjamin, Michael Nyman, Barrington Pheloung, and Elvis Costello, among many others. He tours Europe, Japan, and the United States regularly with both ensembles.
In 1998 he directed performances of Monteverdi's L’Incoronazione di Poppea and in 2001 directed a fully staged production of L’Orfeo. As a soloist, he has given many recitals of the rich solo repertoire, and in 1994 he recorded the three Bach sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord with Shalev Ad-El for Chandos Records to critical acclaim.
He teaches viola da gamba at the Royal College in London and both Baroque cello and viol at the Welsh College of Music and Drama.
