The ensemble performs a repertoire ranging from 15th-century wind band music to sophisticated baroque chamber works. In addition to its own concert schedule, WCSE often adds its characteristic sound as support for choral groups or soloists in the Washington DC area.
The instruments played by the group, the cornett and sackbut, were very popular throughout Europe and the colonial Americas.
The versatility of these instruments is demonstrated by the fact that they were used for outdoor entertainment and civic ceremonies as well as for religious services and chamber music.
The membership of the Washington Cornett & Sackbutt Ensemble has grown over the years since its inception.
