Currende’s style of singing is characterised by its thorough approach to performance practice and especially its lively delivery of musical texts, in 16 century polyphony as well as the Baroque and Classical repertoire. Next to a special affinity with the capricious 17 century, Erik Van Nevel and his ensemble are dedicated to revealing the fantastic yet far too little known artistic inheritance of the Flemish polyphonists. The ensemble breathes new life into this ‘old music’ with their captivating and original programming, .
The ensemble has been recorded frequently by Flemish Radio, Dutch Radio, Westdeutsche Rundfunk, France Musique and has been broadcast while touring in Italy, Germany, Japan, Sweden, The Netherlands, France, Israel, Spain and Portugal.
Other orchestras have also regularly invited Currende’s collaboration, including ‘Anima Aeterna’ conducted by Jos Van Immerseel, ‘La Petite Bande’ conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken, ‘Concerto Köln’ conducted by René Jacobs, ‘Concerto ‘91’ Amsterdam and ‘Il Giardino Armonico’ conducted by Giovanni Antonini.
Currende has a very wide-ranging discography. On the ACCENT label, the group has produced recordings of music by such composers as O. Lassus, P. Philips, oratorios by G. Carissimi, motets by H. Schütz, large-scale choral works by D. Scarlatti, the masterful ‘Musica Religiosa’ by J. De Wert and and the monumental music of Giovanni Gabrieli, Adriaan Willaert and Jõan Cererols. Currende has also recorded for EUFODA, with music by Lassus, ‘Passiontide in Polyphony’, Johannes Le Fébure, Hans Leo Hassler, Luca Marenzio, Brussels Baroque Music and the ‘Membra Jesu Nostri’ by D. Buxtehude.
The Currende Consort is an ensemble of four to six vocal soloists. Depending on the programme and the stylistic requirements, the vocal soloists are complemented by an extended continuo group or a Renaissance instrumental group.
Concerto Currende is the group’s own Baroque orchestra.
