Halfway between a chamber music group and an orchestra, these acknowledged soloists give a new interpretation of the wide instrumental and vocal repertoire of the XVIIth and XVIIIth century, in the spirit of freedom, plurality and creativity, which was the mark of the XVIIth century musicians. The Folies Françoises, named after François Couperin's thirteenth book, are keen on expressing the whole range of colours and feelings representing the music of those days.
A hard core of permanent musicians favouring both hard work and open dialogue distinguishes this ensemble which has lately created a new form of relations with the audience. At the avant-garde of the new generation of baroque music, the soloists are keen on developing a proper and recognizable tone in the service of the greatest guest conductors or soloists, and of presenters involved in a genuine research for baroque repertoire interpretation.
The Folies Françoises have recorded a recital of French opera aries with Patricia Petibon. The CD is distributed by EMI on an international scale (to be released next fall).
« Music does not result from virtuosity only : its very essence emanates from the performer's inner self. That, the Folies Françoises keep constantly in mind : all of them are dedicated to music with force and generosity. This quest for music as asceticism is the bond linking us together. It is such a bless to sing and spend some quality time with them. » Patricia Petibon
« It is a small band in which inspiration comes from all sides. I know for sure that when I listen or play with these friends again, I will hardly recognize them, since they keep improving. » Anner Bylsma
« I have hardly ever sung with an ensemble so open to dialogue and whose meticulous work goes along with a great sence of humour. » Natalie Dessay
