I have provided some works that are sung and heard almost every day. There would be more of them if at the moment they were not beyond my powers. The cause is not art, but the spring of the press and the imprinting power are broken. During this time, my dear friends exclaim: ‘Temper your worries with some rejoicing’...” When Jacobus Gallus wrote these lines, in 1589, he was a man worn out, old before his age, undermined by vigils, insomnia and work. His brother Georg would say it again some years later: Gallus was submerged by the requests of his friends, who all sent him texts to set to music. “I wish to give pleasure to everyone,” said the composer...
