Carlo Gesualdo
By Diego Fischerman. Translated by Yolanda Acker
The last of fifteen candles has gone out. In the darkness, “Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, who has visited and redeemed his people”, is heard coming from the choir. It is the Office of Tenebrae, Holy Saturday, and the composer of the music has made darkness his office. Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza, nephew of the cardinals San Carlo, Alfonso (Archbishop of Naples) and Federico Borromeo, the grandson of Pope Pius IV, and the husband and assassin of his cousin, Maria d’Avalos, exalted by Stravinsky during the twentieth century and the subject of an opera by Alfred Schnittke, nevertheless remains in the shadows.

Biographies of Gesualdo abound in titles such as Composer and Assassin, Prince of Suffering or Assassin in five voices. His music, or at least the last two of his six books of madrigals and his final Responsoria et alia ad Officium Hebdomadæ Sancta spectantia (Tenebrae Responsories), published by the composer’s own printer in 1611, was forgotten for over three centuries. Its pervasive popular flavour led to its resurgence as a result of the crisis in tonality and functional harmony. From a present-day point of view, Gesualdo’s chromatic accidentals, dissonances and extreme expressive contrasts make him sound like a visionary. Perhaps that is why the legend continues to grow.
