10 CDS FOR A DESERT ISLAND: ANDREAS SCHOLL
I recorded this CD with one of my favourite orchestras. It is a marvellous ensemble with which I feel in perfect sympathy. The musicians are not only technically excellent, but we also share the same ideas about music. A rare harmony has established itself between the orchestra, its director Paul Dyer and me. On tour, from the very first concert we were in total empathy. It was an extraordinary experience.

He interests me a lot because of his extreme professionalism, the quality and sensuality of his voice and his artistic personality.

A radiant poetry and joy emanate from this oratorio by Handel. Solomon personifies that serene wisdom which calls out to mankind, which the choir represents and whose interventions traverse a great range of moods, from meditative gentleness to enthusiastic power. I have fond memories of the recording sessions in the small church at Tooting with Paul McCreesh.

The most intimate work and yet the most vast in terms of the performance forces it requires. In it, Bach expresses his extreme religious fervour. One is seized by the lyricism of the prayer and meditation. I always wonder whether I am up to singing music of such dimensions. To interpret Bach is an act which carries a veritable responsibility requiring real commitment. Once again, Philippe Herreweghe's interpretation highlights the exceptional qualities of this work and the intense emotion it exudes.
