10 CDS FOR A DESERT ISLAND: GERARD LESNE
Gerard Lesne
Alto. This is the term used to define his own voice by a singer who has been exploring the highways and byways of the baroque for more than fifteen years, marrying the highly spiritual sensibility of sacred works with the voluptuous sounds of the secular repertoire. Possessing a transparent beauty, his voice combines all the powers of the soul using its exceptional coloration, luminous in the high register, intense in the low. Gérard Lesne touches us with the joy and sadness merged in the emotion aroused by his singing.

A very important discography of memorable interpretations mark the career of the artist, who is often accompanied by his ensemble Il Seminario Musicale. In the French repertoire Charpentier and Brossard occupy a place of privilege, as do Bach, Handel, Hasse, and the Englishmen Blow and Purcell, as well as the great Italians from Monteverdi to Scarlatti and Vivaldi. A disc devoted to the Bach family will be released in April 2002. — M.H.
