THE SCHOLARS BAROQUE ENSEMBLE
Two members of The Scholars live in Spain. Mere coincidence? No, it was their choice. Van Asch, the bass with a surprising social-cultural background, explains his theory: “Contrary to what the majority of the Spanish population believes, I find Spain to be one of the most cultural countries in Europe, certainly much more so than England or Germany, where culture is only for the elite. The Spanish middle class is very open; they go out, attend concerts, but most of all, they have fun. In short, for me Spain offers a unique standard of living”. And Van Asch has sewn musical and personal roots: He and his family have lived in Altafulla -near Tarragona- since 1976, where he organises the “Festival of Voices”. According to Van Asch “Altafulla is one of the most beautiful seventeenth-century towns. The Festival concerts take place in the castle plaza”.

The Scholars and The Scholars Baroque Ensemble record exclusively for Naxos, but they don’t place too much importance on their choice of recording label since from the outset they considered themselves as “a live music quartet who prefer concerts to recordings”. This principal guided their attitude with respect to their recording label, which “records projects that have previously been presented in concert. In The Baroque Ensemble’s 15-year existence, we have only been invited to give a concert once as a result of a recording”. In order to explain this paradox, Van Asch resorts to the findings of a study by the Arts Council of Great Britain made many years ago stating that record collectors and concert goers are not one and the same audience; “at least in our case, this seems to have been proven correct”. However, finally, he unashamedly admits “Naxos was something very positive for us”.
