| Youth is not an artistic category, as much as halls and cultural associations may insist on staging exhibits by «young artists» and some journalists tire us with dog-eared expressions to this effect. To call someone a «young artist» is to diminish their skills and assign a pre-conceived value to their work. With all this cleared up, needless to say the singer we are referring to is young. Very young. And she is good. Is that because of her age or in spite of it? Nurial Rial, a soprano, was born in Manresa in the Catalonia region, and because she is young, we can say when: 1975. A contest she won in 1997 and her debut on José Miguel Moreno’s Glossa record «Claros y frescos ríos» in a major role -«really committed», as Rial puts it- helped launch her career. Along the way she has worked with Savall, Jacobs, Minkowski, José Miguel and Emilio Moreno, and with groups such as La Petite Bande and Il Giardino Armónico. She divides her time between her studio at the Conservatory in Basle, where she has lived for five years, and the concerts she gives all over Europe. |
