Christopher Hogwood has been at the forefront of the early music world for a generation. Thirty years ago he founded The Academy of Ancient Music, with whom he pioneered the historically-informed re-appraisal of much baroque and classical music.

His musical interests extend well beyond this. In the nineteenth-century repertoire he has particular fascinations with the music of Niels Gade and of Mendelssohn. He has always been interested in new music, and recently conducted the 60th birthday concert for the composer Robin Holloway. In many ways his approach shows how a sensitive historical awareness can bring new insights into music of all periods.

Away from the concert platform his work as a performer is balanced by the editing of music: current editing projects include music from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book for Musica Britannica and Mendelssohn’s concert overtures for Bärenreiter.
