ROBERT KING
Robert King
By Brian Robins. Pictures by Jim Tour
Robert King appears to have been on the early music scene for so long that it comes as something of a surprise to remind oneself that he is still only in his mid-forties.

Yet paradoxically, to see King on the concert platform or to meet him is to create a mirror image of that surprise, for such is his youthful appearance and almost boyish enthusiasm that he appears even younger than he in fact is.

The impression that the English conductor is a long-standing fixture on the early music circuit is of course largely accounted for by the long-running series of recordings King has made for Hyperion with his King’s Consort, the vocal and instrumental ensemble he founded in 1980. Extraordinarily, it is a discography that now totals in excess of 85 CDs and one that reflects King’s empathy with a wide range of Baroque music that includes no fewer than three complete series devoted to the music of Purcell, a composer on whom King has also written an entertaining and lavishly produced book.

Notwithstanding, King’s work with the King’s Consort should not be allowed to obscure the fact that he today also pursues a highly active career as an international conductor, directing mainstream orchestras in the USA, Spain and Scandinavia in addition to being Artistic Director of the Nordic Baroque Festival in Sweden and, more recently, the ION Festival in Nürnberg.

The evening before Brian Robins met Robert King at the West London offices of the King’s Consort, the conductor had directed a sell-out concert at London’s Wigmore Hall.

The programme, with soprano Carolyn Sampson and flautist Rachel Brown, consisted of a fairly mainstream selection of works by Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann.

What was unexpected was King’s employment of single-strings-per-part, something one does not readily associate with him.

The subject formed the opening topic of conversation.
