10 CDS FOR A DESERT ISLAND: HILLE PERL
Bach Musical Offering BWV 1079 and CANONS BWV 1072-1078, 1086-1087 hännsler edition bachakademie No 133
Of course this is an essential piece of music, timeless and magical. On this CD it is also very well played by extemely fine musicians associated with the Freiburger Barockorchestra, a group of people I feel very connected to. What makes this CD special are also the additional pieces, those wonderful and witty canons that I had never heard before.

Jethro Tull, THICK AS A BRICK. Chrysalis CDP 32 1003
One of the finest popular music compositions, I could never be without this CD; fun and virtuosity and of course, the mood of the entire trip. In a way it is great that we can have this as a CD now, it really is one long incredible song and we don’t need to turn the LP over any more. So you ride yourself over the fields and you make all your animal deals and your wise men don’t know what it feels to be thick as a brick.

Rabih Abou-Kahlil, MORTON’S FOOT. Enja records ENJ-9462 2
Rabi Abou-Kahlil has the gift and the courage to bring together the finest musicians he can find and he lets them play. In this respect, he is probably one of the finest directors in the world, even though he probably wouldn’t even consider himself as‘director’. The incredible voice of Gavino Murgia is the only one of its kind I’ve heard worldwide. The way it is complemented by the amazing playing of the rest of the band in pieces like Ma Muse M’abuse, and Waltz for Dubbya really make this CD inspiring.

The Grateful Dead, WORKINGMAN’S DEAD. Warner Bros. Records 246 049
What can one say? This is some of the finest material the Dead used on their tours; the interesting thing is that this is really only is the basics that later in the concerts were turned into real live music, courageously and recklessly, without a net. But the material also has the fine potential to be played a thousand times and still live. On this CD you find the classics Uncle John’s Band and Casey Jones. Jerry is dead, long live Jerry.

Arvo Pärt, TABULA RASA. ECM Records, ECM 1275
A recording that somehow falls out of time, especially the title piece Tabula Rasa. The best thing is to lie down on the floor, close your eyes and just walk through the music in your mind. This music frees the spirit and cleanses the mind, it broadens the vision and takes you into the universe, where you understand how insignificant you are and that it doesn’t matter, since one is the universe.....or so.
