From the Middle Ages until today, there have been many women who have composed music despite, at times, having to overcome many difficulties. But there are few who had such exceptional talent like Hildegard Von Bingen or Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre.

The Goldberg Magazine wants to pay tribute to these women who were involved in Early Music and so we have chosen these two great composers, whose works and talent still surprise and fascinate their contemporaries.

So we have put together Hildegard Von Bingen and Elisabeth Jacquet to make a pack of 2 magazines that explore the history of these two extraordinary women, who despite the difficulties of their time, were able to contribute so much to music.

Both Hildegard Von Bingen (Goldberg Magazine Nº 2) and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (Goldberg Magazine Nº 20) were featured composers in our magazine and their life and work are covered in the main article of these magazines.

As Antonio Ezquerro explains in issue number 2, Hildegard Von Bingen was much more than just a simple Benedictine nun from the twelfth century. Of noble birth, this exceptional woman maintained correspondence with several popes, emperors and kings from her seclusion as a cloistered nun, and was not only a composer but a mystic writer, visionary and poet. As well as leaving us with very relevant literary, theological and scientific works, the "Sibyl of the Rhine" was a woman ahead of her time and gave us very important musical productions mainly made up of liturgical compositions, poems and spiritual chants.

In the main article of Goldberg issue Nº 20, Catherine Cessac, studies Jacquet de la Guerre, the most prolific French Baroque composer and harpsichord player. Described then as "the best woman musician in the World" her talent and incredible skills of interpretation, composition and improvisation were applauded by the court and king. Her career was full of success and she was praised as a performer as well as a composer and became one of the most important women during the time of Louis XIV.

Bring home the history of these two great Early Music women from only 12 Euros and enjoy reading the Goldberg Magazine, the most beautiful Early Music magazine in the world.
