Emilio Moreno and El Concierto Español will offer two concerts devoted to works from the sacred and secular repertoire composed between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. In the first, entitled “Los Conciertos Espirituales: de la Ilustración al Romanticismo”, the ensemble, accompanied by José Miguel Moreno, Raquel Andueza and the actors Sandra Toral and Juan Jesús Valverde, will perform Antoine de Lhoyer’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, a symphony by Manuel García and the Spanish version of the melodrama Ariadne auf Naxos by Georg Anton Benda.
In the concert entitled “Los Conciertos Espirituales: la Iglesia y las Capillas Musicales”, Moreno will conduct vocal and instrumental works by Carlos Baguer, José Lidón, Francisco Federico, Joseph Pons and Cayetano Mens, with special appearances by Raquel Andueza and José Pizarro. The festival also presents three concerts by Fernando Espí devoted entirely to the 19th century Spanish repertoire for classical guitar; a concert by Marta Almajano, accompanied by Michel Kiener (fortepiano) and Luz Martín León-Tello (castanets), based around works by the Catalan guitarist and composer Fernando Sor.
The title of the programme, “A dónde vas Fernando incauto”, alludes to a series of patriotic songs that Sor composed when he was an officer in the Spanish army fighting against the French at La Mancha and Aranjuez. The concert also includes works by Manuel García and Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga. Another ensemble appearing at the Festival is Ars Longa, conducted by Teresa Paz, whose concert entitled “Las Luces de América” will be devoted to 18th-century Hispano-American religious choral music, featuring the composers Esteban Salas and Rafael Antonio Castellanos.
This year Marc Minkowski’s Les Musiciens du Louvre will be participating for the first time in the Granada festival. The French ensemble will give two concerts: in the first, they will perform Handel’s Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno, HWV 46ª with Malin Hartelius, Ann Hallenberg, Nathalie Stutzmann and Kresimir Spicer; their second concert, “Una sinfonía imaginaria” is a programme of theatre pieces by Rameau, presented in the form of a symphony.
Bach will be the subject of of a programme performed by Wilbert Hazelzet, Catherine Manson, Jaap ter Linden and Maggie Cole; and, finally, Gerd Türk, Alayne Leslie, Ab Koster, Josep Borràs and Jordi Reguant will give a programme of works by Telemann, Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde, Johann David Heinichen, Joseph Bodin Boismortier and Karl Heinrich Graun. As in previous years, the organizers will offer the International Manuel de Falla Courses in parallel with the Festival.
