ENO’s tradition of producing world-class Handel opera is maintained by this stylish new interpretation of Partenope by Christopher Alden (director of ENO’s Olivier Award-nominated production of The Makropulos Case). Set in 1920’s Paris, the comic tale unfolds around the all-powerful Partenope and her inner-circle of intriguing and mysterious admirers who jostle for position in her clandestine world where nothing is quite as it seems.

The creative team takes the audience on a sensory journey, with sets and costumes influenced by the art and couture of the era. This elegant staging is further enhanced by the intricately woven and layered score, with its glorious arias and music ensuring a performance of rare beauty and delight.

Making his ENO conducting debut is Christian Curnyn who takes charge of a unrivalled cast of Handelian singers led by Rosemary Joshua in the title role, alongside John Mark Ainsley and Patricia Bardon, all of whom previously triumphed in ENO’s Semele, and Christine Rice, an outstanding performer in ENO’s recent Agrippina.
