LUFTHANSA FESTIVAL OF BAROQUE MUSIC 2008

The 2008 Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music in London, 15-21 May, presents glorious music performed by international artists at St John’s, Smith Square, Westminster Abbey, and St. Margaret's Church, Westminster. The festival theme is The Triumph of Peace featuring joyful operas, carefree cantatas and euphoric Te Deums by Bach, Handel, Lully, Rameau, de Brossard, Monteverdi and many more.

CHELTENHAM MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Cheltenham Festival, founded in 1945, has from its inception encouraged creativity, young artists and performances of recent works, sometimes played by the composers themselves. This policy is still firmly in place, as the first weekend’s concerts of this year’s festival attest: the events of 5 and 6 July will feature works from the early repertoire revisited by uninhibited musicians.
ALDEBURGH FESTIVAL

Founded after World War II by Benjamin Britten as a vehicle for his music and music making with friends who came to include Sviatoslav Richter and Mstislav Rostropovitch, the Aldeburgh Festival has long outlived the composer’s death in 1976. 2008 will in fact be the 61st year of the festival, which is based on Snape Maltings, the superb concert hall situated in a beautiful landscape on the East Coast of England.

The first week of the London Handel Festival 2008 started on 13 March with an exciting and moving performance of Joshua , conducted by Laurence Cummings, in the Festival's principle venue, St George's Church, Hanover Square. The concert was recorded live by SOMM Recordings with publication planned for the end of 2008.

The Classical Opera Company has established an outstanding reputation for the valuable work that it does in identifying and nurturing exceptional young singers. Following its sell-out retrospective of J.C. Bach in January, the company returns to Wigmore Hall on 18 April with a recital by Associate Artists sopranos Sophie Bevan and Rebecca Ryan and tenor Allan Clayton, with piano accompaniment by the company’s conductor and artistic director, Ian Page. The programme comprises operatic highlights from three of the greatest composers of the eighteenth century.

The London Handel Festival reaches its 31st year in 2008. Centred on St. George’s Church, Hanover Square, the church where Handel himself worshipped, the festival not only features a wide variety of concerts, but also incorporates the sixth Handel Singing Competition for singers between the ages of 23 and 34.

The European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO) is now inviting applications for the 2008 Audition Courses from Europe’s most talented young baroque musicians.

If you are under 30 years old and have an EU passport, you could be a member of EUBO 2008 for projects with directors Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Enrico Onofri and Roy Goodman. Between July and December 2008, EUBO will undertake four tours, rehearsing in Luxembourg, Germany and France and giving concerts throughout Europe (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, UK, Spain, Sweden, Bulgaria & Romania).
