Born in 1969, the Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski began to play the piano at the age of 6 and studied at the Conservatoires of Lyon and Strasbourg, the University of Southern California and the Chopin Academy in Warsaw.

His London recital debut at the Wigmore Hall in February 1991 - featuring Beethoven's Diabelli Variations and the Bagatelles op.126 - was enthusiastically received by both press and public, thus launching his international career. ‘A profoundly moving experience...the audience was transfixed,’ wrote Adrian Jack in The Independent.

Since then, Anderszewski has appeared in numerous major recital series, such as the Ravinia Rising Stars Series, the BBC Pebble Mill Celebrity Recital Series and the International Piano Series at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. He has also performed at high-profile festivals such as Bergen, Cheltenham, Harrogate, La Roque d’Anteron, Brighton, Bath, Edinburgh, and the Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse.

He appears regularly at the Wigmore Hall in London and Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and in 99/00 will take part in the Folle Journée in Nantes, Les Grands Interprètes in Lyon, the recital series at the Theatre de Champs Elysees and the Chopin Society in Minneapolis. In May 2001, Anderszewski will return to Japan and the Far East with a major solo tour.

Anderszewski's concerto engagements have included performances with the London Philharmonic, London Symphony, Philharmonia, City of Birmingham Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic and New Zealand Symphony orchestras. Among the conductors with whom he has worked are Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Gerd Albrecht, En Shao, Markus Stenz, Claus Peter Flor, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and Christopher Hogwood. In 99/00 and 00/01 seasons he will collaborate with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, the Montpellier Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and Symphony orchestras and the Orchestre National de Radio France (under Charles Dutoit).

Piotr Anderszewski's first solo disc - featuring works by Bach, Beethoven and Webern - was released in 1996 and subsequently won the 1996 Polish Critics' Prize and his most recent recording, an all Bach CD for the Harmonia Mundi label, was released in early 1999 to great critical acclaim. The film-maker Bruno Monsaintgeon will be capturing in June 2000 Anderszewski’s particular relationship with Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations on a film based on a similar format to that of his earlier award-winning film of Glenn Gould’s Goldberg Variations.

Anderszewski has a predilection for highly structured works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Bartok and Webern. ‘His performances of the most complex Bach and Beethoven have a white-hot conviction...Among younger pianists he seems most likely to join the greats.’ (BBC Music Magazine).
