Pomerium

Pomerium is a group specialising in the performance of the vocal music of the Renaissance which is not often heard. This is both fortunate and, at the same time, disappointing. Disappointing, because there are few opportunities to hear this music performed live and, to my knowledge, few recordings of it. Fortunate, because maintaining themselves at a distance from the commercial scene, each of the group's recordings is an event in itself.

For the present, Pomerium's new CD is an indispensable part of the record collection of anyone who is interested in the music of Du Fay, since it includes a recording of his Recollectio Festorum Beate Marie Virginis, discovered just over two decades ago. The work consists of a series of pieces in plainchant written in 1457 by the Flemish composer for the institution of a new feast in the cathedral of Cambrai. This very rare example of plainchant is followed by the Magnificat sexti toni, a way of concluding the Vespers, and another four polyphonic compositions: the motets Nuper rosarum flores, Alma redemptoris mater, Letabundus and Ecclesie militantis.

Nuper rosarum and Ecclesie militantis are two of Du Fay's most famous works, the first associated with the consecration of the cathedral of Florence in March 1436, and the second perhaps dedicated to the coronation of Pope Eugene IV in March 1431. Both have been recorded several times, although none of the recordings of which I am aware is of the standard of that by Pomerium. Their vocal diction, elegant performance, perfect combination of voices and ductility result in an extraordinarily luminous version, which is a far cry from the heaviness which characterises other recordings.
