JOHANN RUDOLF AHLE

Masaaki Suzuki

Concerto Palatino , Bach Collegium Japan

BIS CD 821
1996 - 56:10 min.

The glory of Schütz, and the more ephemeral glory of Schein and of Scheidt, has perhaps eclipsed other names of this politically troubled but musically fecund period which followed the Reformation. Born in 1626 in Thuringia, at Mülhausen, Johann Rudolf Ahle spent his entire career in his native town as organist, and even mayor shortly before his premature death at the age of 47 years. What would have come from this genuine talent if his time had not been so limited? What is certain is that his prolixity then corresponded to the tastes and needs of his contemporaries, since he had no less than 20 published editions to his name. He supplied for the new cult a number of sacred songs, hymns, for the liturgy as well as for festivals (on German texts) or for domestic devotion. Of his instrumental music there survives only a collection of dances.

The compositions included on this recording are taken from his principal anthology, Neu-gepflanzte Thüringische Lust-Garten..., and bring together a short Lutheran Mass (Kyrie and Gloria), sacred concerts for from one to four voices, with instrumental accompaniment and basso continuo, and two Magnificats (for seven and for eight voices). The very theatrical expression and the division of the texts in highly characterized verses prefigure the future cantata.

Without any pretentions to being erudite music, but on the contrary an obvious concern for liturgical and contemplative efficacy, these pieces, extremely well performed, will be for any disc collector an interesting testimony to the musical vitality of the Germany of the middle of the 17th century, ferment for the genius of Bach (briefly also organist at Mülhausen after Ahle's son!) half a century later.SOPHIE ROUGHOL
