The ensemble's name is inspired on Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, Frederick the Great's youngest sister who -just like her older brother- cherrished the art of playing the traverso and composed her own music.
The music is played straight from the sources: Wim Brabants and Pieter van Overloop went after early manuscripts and original prints in many European and Uited States'libraries.
The repertoire of the Amalia Ensemble contains trio sonatas from France (Jacques Hotteterre,Joseph Bodin de Boismortier), Germany (Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Sebastan Bach, Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach), England (Georg Friedrich Handel, John Loeillet) and Low Countries originated music (Loeillet from Gent, Willem de Fesch who was born in Alkmaar etc). Among these, works for two traversos and works for solo harpsichord are presented as well.
